The purpose of this article is to describe a simple task in which we will try to create a mathematical model demonstrating navigation of a sailing yacht on the open sea heading to a set point. We will try to work out the way how to find the optimal starting direction for the yacht, so it reaches its destination in the shortest time possible. We will deal with the case where the yacht travels consistently upwind.
