This paper represents the text of a lecture held by the author on December 4, 2002 as a part of the series of lectures of professors of Comenius University for general public. The lecture adresses a number of issues from attempts to characterize mathematics (is it a tautology or not?) and mathematical thinking to the questions of the need of its development and support in Slovakia.
