In the article, we deal with the method which already in antiquity allowed to determine the areas of plane figures bounded by curves or the surfaces and volumes of solids without the use of notion of limit. This method can be considered as an alternative to the theory of limits, nowadays, it is called the method of exhaustion. In the introduction of the article, we try briefly describe the historical development of ideas leading to the origins of this method.
