Abstract
Mission Cassini-Huygens, established in 1989 as a result of an agreement between NASA, ESA, and ASI, is about to end. The scientific goal of the mission has been an in-depth exploration of the Saturnian system. The mission has consisted of two parts: the Huygens lander and the Cassini orbiter. The Cassini-Huygens tandem was launched on October 15, 1997. It began orbiting Saturn on June 30, 2004, and thus became the first artificial satellite of that planet. Huygens landed on Titan on January 5, 2005; it operated for three hours, as planned. Including the post-launch cruise, Cassini has remained in an uninterrupted operation for over nineteen years. Among other discoveries, the Cassini instruments have detected geysers on Enceladus, a mountain chain on Iapetus, two periods of the SKR emissions from Saturn, and hydrocarbon lakes on Titan. The Cassini spacecraft will be directed to plunge into the atmosphere of Saturn in September 2017. This will terminate the Cassini-Huygens mission.
